Thomas L. Alsbury is a professor of educational leadership at Seattle Pacific University and a former teacher, principal and district administrator. He currently co-directs the national University Council for Educational Administration Center for Research on the Superintendency and District Governance. Alsbury is the founder and president of Balanced Governance Solutions, an educational consulting group focused on researching and improving school governance. Alsbury is listed as the foremost expert on school governance by the Associated Press and has consulted on school governance issues in 12 countries and across the United States. He has over 50 publications on school board and superintendent research. His 2008 book, “The Future of School Board Governance: Relevance and Revelation,” earned Alsbury the UCEA Culbertson Award for significant contributions to educational leadership research. The latest contribution is the completion of an international school board survey in the U.S., Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland and the 2015 book of board tools for effective practice from Harvard Press entitled “Improving School Board Effectiveness: A Balanced Governance Approach.”
