Theresa Deussen directs evaluation work at Education Northwest in Portland, Ore.  For the past 15 years, she has worked on a range of studies throughout the western U.S.  with a focus on programs and supports for English learners, as well as on effective core reading instruction and interventions. This includes the evaluation of Reading First in five states, of Striving Readers in Washington, and a review of English language services in Washington, among other projects. Currently she is completing an Institute of Education Sciences-funded cluster randomized trial of Project GLAD, an approach to making content instruction accessible to English learners in the mainstream classroom.  In addition to her content focus, she is interested in teachers’ implementation of what they learn in professional development and what factors enhance implementation. She holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of Michigan.
