Steve Fleischman is the CEO of Education Northwest, a nonprofit research and technical assistance organization headquartered in Portland, Ore. Through nearly 200 current projects, the organization partners with teachers, administrators, policymakers, families, students and community members on applied research, evaluation, professional development and technical assistance activities. Prior to joining Education Northwest, Fleischman served as vice president of the American Institutes for Research (AIR), where he created and led a number of U.S. Department of Education-funded school improvement projects. He also provided senior leadership for projects linking research and practice, including the What Works Clearinghouse, Doing What Works and the National High School Center. Fleischman began his nearly 30-year education career as a middle and high school social studies teacher. After leaving the classroom he served as deputy director of educational issues at the American Federation of Teachers and as the founding executive director of the Education Quality Institute.
