Michael D. Usdan is currently a senior fellow at the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C. He served as president of the organization for 20 years. Prior to that, he was Connecticut’s commissioner of higher education and president of the Merrill Palmer Institute in Detroit. He has also served as a member and president of the school board in the city of New Rochelle, N.Y. He has taught in public schools and was a professor at Northwestern University, Columbia University and the City University of New York. He has published widely on issues relating to urban education and educational policy and currently is a consultant for the Southern Regional Education Board and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, among other groups.
