Manka Varghese is an associate professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on improving the schooling experiences and, ultimately, the lives of linguistic minority youth, especially bilingual students and English-language learners. Varghese is interested in re-envisioning the scholarship and practices of teacher education to better prepare educators to teach linguistic minority students and improve these students’ access to rigorous curriculum and pedagogy. Her other scholarly interests include social justice and language minority education, critical theories in language minority education, and immigration and schooling in international settings. Varghese has taught English as a foreign language and English as a second language to a range of linguistic minority students in Italy, the United Kingdom and the U.S.
