Lorraine M. McDonnell is a professor of political science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to arriving at UCSB, she was a senior political scientist at RAND Corporation. Her research examines the design and implementation of K-12 education policies, and her publications have focused on the politics of student testing, teacher unions and citizen deliberation. In her recent work, she compared the use of research and other types of evidence in the Common Core State Standards initiative. She is a past president of the American Educational Research Association and a member of the National Academy of Education. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her doctorate from Stanford.
