In recent years, Chavous has worked to advance charter school and parental choice programs in a host of jurisdictions around the country, most notably in Louisiana and Tennessee. Chavous is the founder and board chair emeritus for Democrats for Education Reform and former board chair for the Black Alliance for Educational Options. He graduated from Wabash College, where he was an NCAA District All-American in basketball, and from the Howard University School of Law, where he was the president of his graduating class.
