Judy Schickedanz is professor emerita of Boston University’s School of Education, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in child development, early childhood education and early literacy. She started the laboratory preschool at Boston University and was its director for 20 years. Within the Boston University/Chelsea Public School collaborative, she helped start 34 preschool classrooms between 1990 and 1993. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and several books, including her most recent, “So Much More than the ABCs,” published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 2013. She was also senior author on four editions of “Understanding Children and Adolescents,” a college-level child development text. Schickedanz is a past president of the Literacy Development in Young Children group within the International Reading Association. She was a language and literacy foundations and curriculum consultant to several federally-funded Early Reading First projects between 2003 and 2012. She earned a master’s degree in child development and a doctorate in early childhood education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
