Joseph Aguerrebere is associate director of teacher education and public school programs at the California State University Chancellor’s Office. Previously, he was president and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Arlington, Va. During this tenure, the number of board certified teachers quadrupled, and its standards and assessments are seen as the gold standard for identifying and developing accomplished teaching. Prior to NBPTS, Aguerrebere was deputy director at the Ford Foundation in New York. His grant making focused on the development of human capital in educational settings in the U.S. and abroad. His professional career began in Southern California, where he served in five diverse school systems as a teacher and administrator. He later worked as a professor at California State University, Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles. He received his doctorate and master’s degrees in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in political science, all from the University of Southern California.
