Joel Campbell is an associate professor in journalism in the Brigham Young University School of Communications. He holds a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio State University. He teaches media writing, journalism principles, media ethics and research courses. He actively researches First Amendment and freedom of information issues and is past president of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, chairman of the Society of Professional Journalists national Freedom of Information Committee and former open government columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune. He has trained at an Education Writers Association conference in Indianapolis as well as with an education writers group in Utah. In those settings and in others, he has consulted with education writers about access to records when schools claim FERPA restrictions on education records.
