Jane Sundius directs the Education and Youth Program at Open Society Institute-Baltimore, providing advocacy, technical assistance and grants to improve children life outcomes Baltimore and Maryland. Under her direction, the program has led successful campaigns to reform school discipline policies in Baltimore and across the state. She also directed the launch of initiatives to improve student attendance and increase out-of-school time programs. Sundius writes and speaks frequently on urban education, the policy and practice implications of concentrated poverty and trauma on children, school climate, student discipline and attendance. She has also worked as a research and evaluation consultant to non-profits and a senior research associate on a longitudinal study of urban school children. She is an associate adjunct professor at the Institute for Health and Social Policy at Johns Hopkins University. Sundius holds a doctorate in sociology and a master’s degree in public policy from Johns Hopkins and a bachelor’s in history from Yale University.
