The VALUE Institute Launches as Higher Education’s Most Comprehensive Resource for Student Learning Assessment
Partnership Between AAC&U and Indiana University’s Center for Postsecondary Research will Enable Institutions to Leverage Learning Outcomes Evidence to Improve Student Success

Washington, DC—November 15, 2017—The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and Indiana University’s Center for Postsecondary Research (IU CPR) announced today the launch of the VALUE Institute, a continuing resource for higher education institutions to document, report, and use learning outcomes evidence to improve student success in college. The VALUE Institute takes to a nationwide scale the initial work done in collaboration with the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) association’s Multi-State Collaborative to Advance Quality Student Learning (MSC), the Minnesota Collaborative, the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) Collaborative, and nearly one hundred two- and four-year colleges and universities. The VALUE Institute, in tandem with IU CPR’s National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), will create the country’s most comprehensive resource for direct and indirect evidence of student learning in higher education.
The VALUE Institute assessment results will provide actionable information about students’ learning to participating institutions and support capacity building for faculty, institutions, and policy makers on how to use VALUE evidence to support student success and effective pedagogy.

VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) is a campus-based approach to student learning assessment developed and led by AAC&U. VALUE rubrics provide needed tools to assess students’ own authentic work—produced across students’ diverse learning pathways, fields of study, and institutions—to determine whether and how well students are meeting graduation-level achievement in learning outcomes that both employers and faculty consider essential. VALUE rubrics are used to help institutions demonstrate, share, and assess student accomplishment of progressively more advanced and integrative learning.
With no other existing available model for this important work, the VALUE Institute is uniquely positioned to provide evidence that allows faculty, institutional leaders, accreditors, policy makers, and even students themselves to assess and improve the levels of achievement on a set of cross-cutting competencies important for all disciplines.

Higher education institutions are invited to participate in the VALUE Institute by collecting samples of student work, uploading the work into the digital repository, and having the work scored by certified VALUE Institute faculty scorers. Participating institutions receive data and reports from the tested VALUE nationwide database for benchmarking student learning.
