(PITTSBURGH – June 10, 2015) The Sprout Fund and 200 public and private organizations in Pittsburgh are taking an unprecedented approach to meeting the challenge of engaging the city’s youth in education and setting them on a path to discovering their passions and pursuing real world opportunity.
Now, the stories, strategies and insights that Pittsburgh has used to become a leader in learning are being made available to other cities and school systems in the “Remake Learning Playbook,” – the guide to creating an all-encompassing educational environment for children and youth. The Remake Learning Playbook is to be unveiled at the White House as part of the kick-off of the second annual “National Maker Faire” on June 12. The celebration will continue as the “National Week of Making” in Washington, D.C., and around the country with events featuring makers from across the country and representatives of the Department of Education, NASA, and others.
“Breakthrough learning moments don’t just appear out of thin air – communities can come together to give kids the opportunity to indulge their imaginations, pursue their passions, and get the skills they need for the jobs of the future,” said Cathy Lewis Long, Executive Director of The Sprout Fund, the Pittsburgh nonprofit organization that leads the Remake Learning Network.
Pittsburgh’s creativity shines in this “Playbook,” which incorporates innovative learning ideas from teachers, youth workers, museum educators and librarians – and gamers, technologists and roboticists. It brings a 21st century educational environment to students who need the assistance most, those without the resources or access to the enrichment activities that will enable their success in the workplaces of the future.
The Playbook recognizes that youth in the digital age connect to learning in new ways, and educators in- and out-of-school must be ready with creative solutions that will engage these students while giving them the skills and knowledge relevant to the world ahead. In the initial release on June 12, users will be able to share comments and feedback on the playbook in a digital platform. Later releases will include a Web app that will allow users to build a game plan for creating their own innovative learning network and an advocacy kit.
The Remake Learning Playbook focuses on the five strategies and more than 30 “plays” used by the build a and communities can utilize these concrete, feasible strategies to turn their entire city into a campus for learning that best prepares today’s digital youth. Pittsburgh’s success came out of linking learning that occurs in the classroom with diverse contributions from institutions in the city – its schools, museums, libraries, afterschool sites and community centers – where learning already takes place and the researchers and scientists in the region’s universities, its tech entrepreneurs and private enterprise.
The Playbook shows how these different groups can work together to bring children and youth the academic help they need and help them discover new interests and develop relevant skills for success in the digital age. And, equally important, it includes case studies, to show exactly how Remake Learning Network members are transforming education in Pittsburgh, and valuable online links to resources useful to replicate these successes.
