Online Hub Shares Free Library of Innovative Lessons Sourced From Classrooms Around the Globe
A new global campaign from SMART Technologies highlights meaningful uses of technology in classrooms– serving as a source hub for reporters and inspiration for educators around the world
CALGARY, AB — (December 14, 2021) — SMART Technologies (SMART), an edtech company with a 35-year track record of pioneering learning solutions, has announced a new online hub that includes a library of lessons supporting student social-emotional learning, and active learning for classrooms around the world. Serving as a resource for educators looking for new ideas for their classrooms, the library is available in the Lumio by SMART Connections that Matter library – the free-to-use digital learning tool that allows teachers to transform their lessons with interactive activities, games, collaborative workspaces and assessments.
The online site also surfaces insights from a global cohort of innovative school leaders and educators highlighted as part of Connections that Matter, a global initiative by SMART Technologies to honor the pioneering ways educators are strengthening connections within and beyond the classroom that foster greater learning – including investing in social-emotional learning, connecting curricula to real-world problems, and building deeper ties between school and home. These schools join a global community of educators, innovators and teacher ambassadors who are supporting innovation in learning to foster student engagement and support well-being in more than 175 countries.
“It’s never been more important to have a global lens when it comes to education reporting,” said SMART Technologies global education advisor Giancarlo Brotto. “Helping people connect the dots from lessons across the world is the key to helping people truly understand what’s going on in classrooms today.”
As part of the initiative, selected schools are open sourcing lesson activities and resources that strengthen connections among peers, between educators and students, and between families and the classroom. The collection comes on the heels of the OECD’s first-ever survey on social and emotional learning and additional research demonstrating the positive role that strong connections between students and caring adults play in their academic development. Yet, only half of educators in the U.S. believe their schools have the resources needed to meet the social and emotional needs of students returning to the classroom, according to a recent survey of teachers commissioned by SMART.
Educators visiting the site will find a growing collection of stories of connections fostering student well-being, such as how a teacher from Sweden forged student relationships with a school in Florida by asking a simple question about breakfast and how Coeburn Primary connected to its local rural community with ‘Awesome Kid Day.’ Visitors can also explore stories highlighting the latest innotivate pedagogy – such as that of Florida’s NeoCity Academy, where Principal Michael Meechin is building a model of learning focused on connecting students with real-life problems and embracing failure. Brandeis Elementary School’s Principal Dr. Shervita West also shares ways the school’s garden helps harness children’s natural curiosity by prioritizing experimentation and hands-on learning.
This collection of resources comes on the heels of SMART’s Connections That Matter panel, a gathering of experts and educators to take a global look at the state of student wellbeing. Teachers and principals also discussed the power of connection in supporting social emotional development to aid academic recovery in the wake of the pandemic.
