Need a crash course in the latest thinking on how to reform elementary schools? Looking for a different angle on early ed issues, including the primary grades, kindergarten, and pre-K, and how to best teach dual-language learners? Wondering which policy proposals will be most controversial this fall?

Join us at New America for a reporters’ breakfast to introduce five new angles on stories in early and elementary education. You will also meet and hear from reporter Lillian Mongeau, engagement editor and West Coast correspondent at The Hechinger Report. Mongeau is the author of several early education stories in The Atlantic, including The Never-Ending Struggle to Improve Head Start and What Boston’s Preschools Get Right.

We’ll talk about how to de-code the jargon, provide new questions to ask elementary school principals and superintendents, give you a heads-up on Head Start reauthorization, explain how to use a new ranking of all 50 states on early literacy policies, and introduce you to some new specialists in the field. Experts from the New America Education Policy Program will be on hand to answer questions. Author Ruby Takanishi, the former president of the Foundation for Child Development, will be available to discuss the arguments for reform that are at the heart of her new book First Things First! Creating the New American Primary School.

A small number of travel reimbursements and hotel accommodations in DC are available for reporters, bloggers, and other journalists who work for media outlets and live outside the Washington, DC area. If you are interested, please fill out this brief application below and send to Sabia Prescott at by August 24.
