#tellEWA Member Stories (July 8-14)
Here's what we're reading by EWA members this week:

“I made myself a promise ages ago that when I get to a point where I no longer can dream in the classroom … that I would step away.” The Sahan Journal’s Becky Z. Dernbach speaks with the first Somali American to win Minnesota Teacher of the Year about why she is quitting teaching after 10 years. The second-grade teacher won the award in 2020.

“I had to save all of us from what could happen in the future.” No parent ever expects to report their children to the police for acts they may commit, like becoming a school shooter, Tawnell D. Hobbs and Sara Randazzo write for The Wall Street Journal. The reporters explore a common question: Could recent mass shootings have been prevented if someone had intervened earlier?

Some educators reported seeing an increase in classroom disruptions, fights and misconduct in their schools, but others reported no changes. Kalyn Belsha analyzes federal data for Chalkbeat, examining the survey responses of nearly 850 public school leaders and their thoughts on how the pandemic affected students.

Texas provides scenario-based training to prepare educators to carry firearms on campus through a school marshal program. Few school districts opted in. Now the state agency overseeing the marshal program is urging more districts to arm teachers following the Uvalde school shooting, Emily Donaldson reports for The Dallas Morning News.

Alabama continues to have a high teen pregnancy rate despite some declines. Teenagers who are Black, low income or living in rural areas are most affected. This trend could have “deadly consequences” after the end of legalized abortion in the state and neighboring states doctors told Savannah Tryens-Fernandes of AL.com.

Several school-desegregation cases remain active in 2022, decades after the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision to end racial segregation in the nation’s public schools. Scholars highlighted the topic for The Conversation, from the legal history to modern-day issues, in four separate articles compiled by Jeff Inglis.
