Wisconsin One Of Few States Taking Up Higher Education Cuts
Higher education observers across the nation will be watching Friday as the Legislature’s powerful budget-writing committee takes up funding for the University of Wisconsin System.
Wisconsin is one of only a half dozen states that have approved or are considering cuts to higher education funding for the fiscal year starting July 1. Republican governors in Arizona, Illinois, Louisiana and Wisconsin, along with Democratic governors in Connecticut and West Virginia, proposed reducing state support for higher education.
When the dust settles, Wisconsin could be looking at the largest cut in the country. The state is facing a potential $150 million cut in state funding for the UW System each of the next two years.
