Texas School-Funding Trial Begins

Opening statements began Tuesday in a trial over whether Texas is adequately funding public schools, one of several cases in the U.S. challenging state spending on education. About 600 school districts, responsible for educating about three-fourths of the state’s roughly five million K-12 public-school students, filed suit in state court in 2011 after the Texas legislature cut more than $5 billion from the state’s education budget, citing fiscal pressures.
