Tennessee Already Gave Free College Tuition. Now It’s Turning To Students’ Flat Tires.
Tennessee brought thousands of students to college by offering free tuition to community and technical college. But those students were often one unexpected expense away from dropping out.
So officials are looking to fill in some of the financial gaps.
High school seniors and adults who take advantage of the free tuition are on their own for textbooks, transportation and other living expenses. Often, the rush to address something as small as a flat tire or a late electric bill can be enough to derail a low-income student’s college career indefinitely.
