Study on Chicago School Closings in 2013 Evaluates Where Students Ended Up

Researchers found that a school’s proximity to home, often because of safety concerns, was what mattered most for families that wound up enrolling students in schools rated lower than the designated welcoming school. “Either we need more schools that are higher performing in those neighborhoods, or we might need to help families also find transportation and address those things that really make them choose other schools instead of the designated place or places that were higher ranking,” one researcher said.
