Stop Corporal Punishment, US Education Secretary Says as Bills to Do so Are Filed in Texas
Nationwide, more than 110,000 students received corporal punishment in the 2013-14 school year, the most federal data available. More than a third of those were black students. Black boys were nearly twice as likely as white boys to be subject to such discipline, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
Texas is among 15 states that expressly permit corporal punishment. Another seven states have no law explicitly prohibiting such punishment.
