SD Unified’s Touted Grad Rate Excluded Thousands of Students
More than 11,000 students began school as freshmen in San Diego Unified in 2012, and just under 6,000 met graduation requirements in 2016. Yet the district proudly touts a 92 percent graduation rate for the class of 2016. The fact that thousands of students left district schools factored heavily into San Diego Unified’s graduation rate. To get this number, the district excluded thousands of students – like those enrolled in charter schools – from the very beginning. Students who later left for charter schools or moved to other school districts were also excluded along the way.
