In Newtown, Healing Comes Slowly
More Newtown, Connecticut, students are failing classes than in the past. Chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled. Students can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, and they’re having trouble paying attention in class. Students with disabilities have regressed, and more kids are being referred to special education even as the district’s enrollment has dropped. When there’s a loud noise in the classroom or cafeteria or on the playground that conjures Dec. 14, 2012, some students need brief intervention.
