Fewer charter schools opened in Ohio in ’14
Only 11 new charter schools opened this school year. In the entire state. It’s a surprising number given that some years — including last school year — more than 50 charters opened. Ohio consistently has been a boom state for new charter-school ventures, and it’s not at all unusual for more than 30 to open their doors each year. The slowed growth this school year signals greater caution after a particularly tumultuous year for charters. More charter schools closed last school year in Columbus alone than opened this school year statewide.
