Cuomo Demands Tougher Teacher Evaluations
Who gets to grade the teachers?
That question is at the center of a debate ignited by [New York] Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is challenging how much control local school districts should have over teacher evaluations. The governor has proposed to give the state, rather than teachers’ local supervisors, the power over who rates the performance of teachers in their classrooms.
Scores of teachers took to the streets in Nyack and across New York recently to protest the proposal.
The governor also wants to increase the weight of state-administered tests given to students in grades three through eight in evaluating the performance of their teachers.
