3-month-old’s Death Didn’t Shut Down Unlicensed Home Day Care
Seven months after 3-month-old Coree Carmichael died at an unlicensed day care in this small Northern Indiana city, the state agency in charge of enforcing day care law finally showed up. An inspector from the Indiana Bureau of Child Care walked into Amber McNay’s home on Oct. 24 and soon discovered she had been operating a day care illegally for most of the past eight years.
The reason it took so long for inspectors to get there is they didn’t know the day care existed. The Indianapolis Star developed a data base of child care centers and inspection reports and rankings.
