The Chronicle of Higher Education is seeking an entrepreneurial reporter to explain how both high-tech and low-tech innovations are changing the college experience for students and faculty. This reporter will identify emerging ideas, approaches, and tools used on campuses – including big data, outsourcing, and surveillance – and examine their successes, unintended consequences, and pitfalls.

Your work will inform an audience of campus leaders who make crucial decisions about change at their institutions. It will also seek to reach an audience of professors and student-affairs staff who need to understand the implications of the changes happening around them. And it will ask critical questions about the degree to which innovations serve the missions of institutions and those of higher education at large.

The reporter who excels at this work is both a systems thinker and an empath, someone with a knack for spotting trends and then connecting them to real people. This person will be eager to develop into a public-facing expert producing work in multiple platforms and media — including news and feature articles, newsletters, longform reports, and live and virtual events. 

The ideal candidate has at least two years of experience covering and demystifying a sector. Familiarity with higher-education issues, particularly the student and faculty experience and/or campus innovation and technology, is a plus. You’ll need to be self-motivated, eager to take initiative, and skilled at framing journalism for a national audience.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Chronicle of Higher Education took appropriate measures to ensure the safety of all staff members. Thus, we are working remotely during this time. The safety, health, and wellbeing of our staff are of the utmost importance to us. This role is currently 100% remote during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once it is safe to return to the office, this role will be based in our Washington, DC office.
