The Chronicle of Higher Education
The nation’s largest newsroom dedicated to covering colleges and universities, The Chronicle of Higher Education produces vital journalism that drives national conversations about a sector at the heart of the American experiment. For more than 50 years, readers invested in the academic experience have turned to us for unrivaled insight into how higher education works and why it matters. The values of those readers — thoughtful, engaged, and passionate — are also the values of our company. We believe in the power of expert, morally urgent journalism. And we believe in the importance of taking innovative steps to expand the audience for, and the impact of, our award-winning work.
The Chronicle of Higher Education is seeking an enterprising journalist with a passion for beat reporting on topics of complexity and vast importance.
You’ll delve into a range of topics. Chief among them: the impact of higher-education policy at both the federal and state levels on colleges, students, and people altogether outside of the academy. You won’t just translate and distill discussions about policy for a sophisticated audience; you’ll knock on doors and dig through documents and data to ferret out how policies make real impacts on real people. You’ll produce work of moral force with an emphasis on equity and accountability.
The right candidate has at least three years of experience and is a natural storyteller who can mine new sources to generate creative and distinctive story ideas, framed for a national audience. You’ll need to be self-motivated and proactive, eager to collaborate with others, attuned to different approaches for telling and distributing stories, and flexible enough to juggle multiple stories and approaches at once. You’ll write often on deadline, and you’ll look to drive conversations about the big issues facing colleges and universities.
