The HEDCO Institute is a research and outreach unit within the University of Oregon (UO) College of Education (COE), which aims to close the gap between educational research and practice. The HEDCO Institute’s core mechanism for improving practice is through the conduct of authoritative rapid evidence reviews and research syntheses that meet the immediate decision-making demands of local, state, and national school leaders. The work of the HEDCO Institute is carried out by a team of faculty and staff who work collaboratively with affiliated faculty at the UO and an external advisory board comprised of research and policy partner institutions, school leadership organizations, professional societies, foundations, and business and industry partners. The HEDCO Institute also provides research and outreach training and experience to students from across the COE and the UO.
The HEDCO Institute is a central research and outreach unit in the COE that operates within the Dean’s Office. Functions of the HEDCO Institute thus facilitate the success of the entire college as well as external alumni, donors, and community partners.
The Senior Writer/Editor is the lead producer and editor of the science writing that translates the findings of rapid evidence reviews and other research originating from the HEDCO Institute. The Senior Writer/Editor collaborates closely with Institute faculty and staff to create communication products and materials that distill complex scientific information into compelling and accurate language and formats appropriate for local, state, and national K-12 school leaders and other key stakeholder audiences.
The Senior Writer/Editor:
• Researches, writes, and prepares communication materials that translate the findings from Institute research, primarily evidence syntheses and rapid reviews;
• Maintains fruitful relationships with Institute faculty, staff, and students;
• Stays informed of the latest trends and news in K-12 education to best position the Institute’s research communication efforts;
• Provides counsel and authority on appropriate levels of coverage and timing for release of Institute research news stories and product releases;
• Is the key content reviewer for print and web publications that support the Institute’s research outreach efforts;
• Collaborates and coordinates with other communications personnel across campus and related agencies (on and off-campus) to develop clear and accurate messaging about the Institute’s science and research.
This position is responsible for strategically translating and promoting the Institute’s research to media, school leaders, lawmakers, legislators, donors, and other influencers. It requires a professional-level understanding of the scientific fields of education and human development as well as research communication protocols in the social, behavioral, and educational sciences. The Senior Writer/Editors will work closely with the Institute’s Executive Director, Partnerships Director, Digital Communications and Marketing Specialist, affiliated faculty, and student workers to support knowledge translation efforts.
There is potential for this position to be fully or partially remote.
• B.A. or B.S. in communications, journalism, or related field
• Three or more years of experience writing and/or editing science news for higher education, science-oriented organizations, newspapers, or magazines
• A commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion
• High attention to detail and accuracy in writing, spelling, grammar, and composition
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
• Superior news judgement, sharp editing, strong research skills, accurate reporting, clear and style-appropriate writing and other skills and conventions of print, photographic and digital media
• Ability to accurately translate complex topics for lay audiences
• Ability to use photography, photo software, and other tools that maximize visual value of products
• Familiarity with best practices for digital content channels: websites, social media platforms, video, podcasts, etc.
• Ability to work independently, manage time and work on multiple deadlines while exercising discretion and judgement
• Demonstrated success working as a member of a team
• Thorough knowledge of Associated Press style
• Familiarity with science and research industry publication norms
• Five years of experience writing and/or editing science news for higher education, science-oriented organizations, newspapers, or magazines
• Experience writing and/or editing for a research university
• Experience writing on K-12 education and/or human development science areas
• Master’s degree in communication, journalism, science, or related field
• Membership for two-plus years in the National Association of Science Writers or American Medical Writers Association
