The coronavirus pandemic hit communities hard in the rural Deep South, where schools are already among the most ill-resourced in the nation, well-paying jobs are few and necessities like Wi-Fi, public transportation and medical insurance are often out of reach. Over the years, Hechinger’s stories have covered the resiliency and innovation of communities fighting back against an education system that has yet to eradicate systemic racism and white supremacy. Our investigations have led to policy changes that have made a real difference in children’s lives in the South.
The senior editor will expand on this critical work and help solidify our presence in the region. They will be comfortable assigning and writing stories that span from early ed to higher ed. The editor will help in identifying and reaching out to local, state and regional news partners, and will assist in developing innovative storytelling and engagement techniques to reach local audiences in collaboration with our web and engagement team.
The position will be remote and based in a Southern state. Exceptional candidates who do not currently live in the South but who have extensive experience covering the region may be considered for the job.
