The Senior Communications Advisor to the President is responsible for planning and executing all of the communications activities for the President and CEO, and plays a central role in positioning CASE and the President as a thought leader. To ensure the effectiveness of the executive office, the Senior Advisor works closely with colleagues in the Office of the President, the Executive Leadership Team, the Marketing and Communications division, as well as other staff, volunteers and stakeholders.

This role requires strong written and oral communication skills aligned with firm judgement, organizational and analytical abilities.

The role offers the opportunity for involvement at the heart of CASE in a busy, challenging and fast-paced environment. The Senior Advisor will develop a firm understanding for both the organizational and governance structure of CASE and will have a strong interest in the educational environment domestically and internationally.

This position requires a keen awareness of organizational realities and the interpersonal skills to relate to and communicate with all levels within CASE, external volunteers, stakeholders and members from someone who is passionate about making a difference and excited about working closely with leadership in support of their agenda.

Position Responsibilities

The core functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Communications

  • Position the President and CEO as a thought leader within the education community and among key stakeholders.
  • Identify and arrange speaking and publication opportunities for the President and CEO.
  • Draft internal and external communications on behalf of the President and CEO, in close consultation with communication and marketing staff around advocacy, brand and visual expression, content strategy and message deployment.
  • Draft internal and external communications on behalf of the Board of Trustees, in consultation with the President and CEO and Vice President for Volunteer and Member Engagement.
  • Identify trending topics and issues of importance for the President and CEO to address.
  • Draft outgoing correspondence to volunteers, members and key stakeholders.
  • Prepare speeches, meeting agendas, talking points, presentations and reports.
  • Conduct research and prepare extended briefings as needed by the President and CEO.
  • Assist with preparation of contact reports and overseeing follow up actions from President and CEO’s meetings, in collaboration with the Senior Executive Assistant to the President and CEO.

Special Projects and Implementation

  • Provide follow-up to any initiative which the President and CEO thinks must be project managed but which does not fall within the remit of any of the senior officers of the organization.
  • Act as the conduit with CASE staff, ensuring urgent or high priority issues are quickly communicated and fast-tracked between all parties.
  • Work with the President, VP Development and other colleague on prospective donor proposals and stewardship reports.
  • Work collegially with other staff and volunteers to coordinate the President and CEO’s programming in terms of planning and execution.
  • Anticipate required deliverables, have a proactive approach.
  • Liaises effectively with other staff at CASE and with key volunteers and members, serving as a CASE representative, if required.
  • Ensure that all teams within CASE are briefed, as appropriate, on the President and CEO’s current and future priorities.
  • Author reports and support strategic and operational planning process in consultation with the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Carry out any other relevant duties which are requested and are commensurate with the level of this post.

Board Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Senior Executive Assistant to the President, in her role as Secretary to the Board of Trustees, to ensure that Board materials are well written and presented.
  • Attend Board meetings and provide support there to the President working with the Vice President, Volunteer and Member Engagement.
  • Provides professional, well-timed advice to staff and committee members on the preparation for and reporting of committee meetings.

Administration and Fiscal Responsibilities

  • Attend and facilitate Executive Leadership Team meetings, including the development of relevant papers and agendas and the preparation and distribution of accurate outcomes of the meeting and ensuring their broader communications, as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Executive Assistant in support of the Office of the President.
  • Exercise fiscal responsibility and judicious use of resources in all aspects of work.

Performs Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned by the President and CEO

Job Complexity and Knowledge

The Senior Advisor receives broad direction from the President and CEO but is expected to work with a high level of autonomy and independence, discretion, confidentiality and diplomacy. The position interacts with CASE staff from across the world, with senior volunteers, members and other high level external key stakeholders. The Senior Advisor will be responsible for his/her own time management and prioritization of tasks to ensure the key responsibilities are met.

Problem Solving and Judgement

High level judgement and problem solving skills are required, as the incumbent is frequently faced with situations which require immediate action in response to issues and requests presented to the President and CEO.   This may involve bringing the matter immediately to the President and CEO’s attention, referring the matter to the Vice-Presidents for advice/action and responding appropriately.  The breadth and  depth  of  understanding  of  an  issue  and  the  key  internal/external  persons handling the issue, and the way in which the issue is handled, all affect the outcome of the situation.

Professional and Organizational Knowledge

  • The Senior Advisor requires a good understanding of CASE, its policies and procedures and an understanding of the culture and politics which enables the incumbent to deal with and/or refer sensitive issues.
  • The Senior Advisor will have an understanding of the portfolio responsibilities of the President and CEO in the context of the mission and goals of CASE. They will also have a good understanding of both the wide range of issues impacting the organization and its key stakeholders, both internal and external and the educational advancement  professions in which our members work.
  • The position requires a deep understanding and respect for the organization’s financial and human resources systems and policies.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree with subsequent 7+ years’ relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Demonstrated experience and confidence in working for senior executives.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with the proven capacity and confidence to build relationships and effectively communicate and negotiate with a diverse range of clients at all levels, including staff, senior academics and senior people from business and non-profit sectors.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills as demonstrated through the delivery of proposals, presentations, business cases, strategic plans, board books or other complex documents.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgment, diplomacy, tact and discretion and proven ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential and appropriate manner.
  • High-level organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize workload and ensure the timely delivery of projects to both internal and external bodies.
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of software packages including PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and familiarity with database programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and interest in educational issues and knowledge of the higher education, independent school and international school sectors nationally and internationally.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and in a busy environment.
  • Familiarity with the CASE culture, current issues affecting the university and school sector with association administrative systems, processes, policies and procedures, and with the advancement professions, desirable.
  • A network of contacts within the advancement sector, desirable.
