Reporter for Education Lab
The Post and Courier
The Post and Courier, winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and a Pulitzer finalist four times since 2013, is looking for reporters to launch a four-person Education Lab in South Carolina.
We deeply value our relationship with our readers, and we believe in the old-school idea that investing in our journalism will lead to more readers and more revenue. Our community has taken notice. Thanks to charitable donations to our nonprofit journalism fund, the Education Lab has funding for the next three years.
Our newspaper is one of the few independent, family-owned papers left in the United States. Our local owners have deep roots in the community and care deeply about this newspaper and its reputation.
The Education Lab will build on the foundation of The Post and Courier’s award-winning project “Minimally Adequate.” South Carolina has made gains since this project published but long-standing, systemic issues remain. The Education Lab will use qualitative and quantitative data to build a baseline understanding of public education in South Carolina. Through quality, watchdog journalism, surveying and community engagement, we will provide potential solutions and necessary accountability.
Before you apply, here’s what we will expect from qualified applicants:
- Demonstrated ability to produce journalism of the highest caliber.
- A commitment to watchdog and enterprise reporting.
- A passion for the importance of every student’s access to quality education.
- The ability to analyze complex systems and data to inform and drive your reporting.
- Examples of clear, direct writing that can make difficult topics easy for readers to understand.
We need journalists who are critical thinkers as well as strong writers. Newsletter and/or podcast experience is also a plus.
The Post and Courier is an equal opportunity employer, and we strongly encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply. Find out more about The Post and Courier here: https://vimeo.com/311322268.
If you think you fit the bill, send a resume, a cover letter and at least 3-5 samples of your work to Managing Editor Autumn Phillips at firstname.lastname@example.org.
