Part Time Writer

We’re hiring a half-time writer to produce content for our clients in the education space. The qualified candidate will need to understand K-12 and higher education, including the subtleties of language and terminology in this space. We need someone who can listen to our clients and their users, and find the interesting story that is often not so apparent even to them.
There may be times when a case study is needed but we really want articles, bylines, thought leadership and opinion pieces which are very different from case studies. We want writing that is interesting and has flair but without muddying up the primary points needed to be conveyed.
You’ll have wide flexibility in setting your work hours but also realizing that turnarounds may sometimes be tight. We welcome people who are self-directed and love to bring up new ideas and angles we haven’t considered but who can also recognize when, sometimes we have to concede a little and write what the client needs.
This is a half-time employment position with a set salary to be negotiated during the second round of the interview process. We won’t squelch your own freelance writing and reporting, however we need to know that you can meet our deadlines. In addition to writing, the candidate will attend client meetings and “discovery” sessions, conduct interviews, do background research, and maintain their own appointment schedule and deadlines. They will also be asked to edit and proof other documents they may not have written. Of particular benefit are candidates who can strategize angles and proactively suggest pitches and ways to approach media outlets and editors.

Candidates must have the following expertise and experience:
- At least 5 years of reporting on K-12 and higher education. If experience is limited to either one or the other, candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge about the segment they do not cover.
- A project portfolio of at least 10 published works on the topic of education or related areas such as family, parenting, workforce and training, or technology.
- Knowledge about the various media outlets including trades, digital news outlets, national, regional and media outlets, syndicates, blogs and podcasts and new media. Our media experts will do the pitching but you need to intuitively know what will work for a company blog versus an influencer’s blog, or what an industry trade will want versus a general news outlet.
- Experience as a teacher or college faculty is a plus but not required.
Salary: $30,000 per year, paid semi-monthly on the 1st and 15th of the month. No benefits are available but half of our 10 holidays will be available to you and we offer a merit-based bonus schedule which we can explain during the interview.
