The National Communications Strategist is responsible for raising the University of South Florida’s national profile by securing coverage in national media stories about important higher education topics or trends. The National Communications Strategist also finds opportunities, such as speaking engagements or written materials, to further position USF as leaders in the higher education industry.
This position reports to the Director of Media Relations and will collaborate with colleagues across the university.
Strategically develop story pitches for national media that will help enhance USF’s reputation, position the university as a leader in the higher education industry and advance institutional goals, such as national ranking improvements. Help maintain consistent coverage for USF in media outlets outside of the Tampa Bay region and state of Florida.
Build, develop and maintain relationships with journalists at national media outlets. Primary focus is on publications and writers that cover higher education.
Meet regularly with key university leaders and communications professionals to identify stories, themes and trends that can help grow USF’s reputation among the general public and other academic institutions.
Analyze media coverage to identify story lines, trends and themes that may provide opportunities to feature and/or quote key USF leaders.
Strategically identify opportunities for USF leadership to speak at national conferences, contribute op-eds, write white papers, develop case studies or create other materials that help position USF as thought leaders in higher education.
Prepare key university leaders for interviews or speaking engagements on higher education topics. Help write talking points, op-eds, white papers, case studies or other materials.
Initiate opportunities for the president and/or other key university leaders to meet with higher education reporters, editors and other relevant industry thought leaders.
Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, digital media, or related field, with 4 years of experience in related positions; or a Master’s degree in the fields listed above and 2 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working inside a newsroom or writing for a higher education publication is eligible as professional experience.
