The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is seeking an ambitious, experienced reporter to cover K-12 schools in metro Atlanta. An ideal fit for this job is someone who is comfortable covering school boards and leadership at the school level in addition to engaging parents and students and getting to know their issues and their aspirations. The person who assumes this position must be adept at evaluating education policy and programming and watchdogging whether decisions made by school leaders yield results. Education is highly regulated, therefore, a successful candidate for this job must hold a clear understanding of how local education governance is influenced by state and federal policies and must also understand how to navigate those bureaucracies.
Education is a high engagement topic at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The reporter filling this role must be adept at delivering breaking news, skilled at delivering smart, engaging enterprise and prepared to deliver tough accountability and investigative reporting. Sourcing is key, so a reporter in this role must be prepared to build a deep base of sources and connections.
- College degree preferred.
- 5 years of professional journalism experience preferred.
- Beat reporting experience preferred.
- Proven record of serving audiences in a fast-paced, productive environment that is shaped by research, audience metrics and audience needs in print and in digital.
- Excellent communication skills with a collaborative attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to produce accountability journalism.
- Interface Requirements: Other newsroom journalists, sources, public officials.
