Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times has an opening on Metro’s education team for a reporter to cover higher education.

The position focuses on coverage of California State University and California Community Colleges, two of the largest and most diverse higher education systems in the nation. We are seeking a candidate with deep interest in higher education issues and trends, with a special emphasis on how institutions are working to close persistent equity gaps, help students attain their educational goals and prepare them for the workforce.

Job Description

The position will be a mix of vital institutional reporting along with features, investigative work and non-narrative storytelling such as explainers, newsletter contributions, live events and appearances on The Times podcast and TV show. Generating ambitious and compelling story ideas and a commitment to breaking news is essential in this competitive beat. As a member of the education team, the reporter must be a generous collaborator and be willing to pitch in on all education-related coverage when needed.


  • A minimum of five years of journalism experience
  • Ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors and the newsroom
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent skills in news writing and reporting, combining strong news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations
  • Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current events
  • Understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration
  • Comfortable appearing on TV and radio on behalf of the L.A. Times

The position is listed as Reporter in the Los Angeles Times Guild. Times staff is currently working remotely, but when we return to the newsroom the position will be based in El Segundo, Calif.
