Higher Education Reporter

CALmatters is a nonprofit nonpartisan journalism venture focused on California state politics and policy.  Launched in 2015 and based in Sacramento with a staff of 14, it is now the largest bureau covering state policy issues as measured by staff size and/or audience reach.

We distribute our work online and through over 100 news organizations throughout the state, including all of California’s major newspapers, the four biggest public radio stations, and hyperlocal outlets like Patch’s 150 California sites. We also distribute our content through leading news portals and apps including Google News, Apple News and Smart News. Top news aggregators, Politico’s California Playbook, the New York Times’ California Today, and Rough & Tumble regularly feature our work.

We are looking for a multi-media journalist with a special focus on and passion for covering California higher education issues. This is a tremendous opportunity for a skilled writer and reporter who is passionate about storytelling and about making a difference. The beat will focus on the nation’s leading system of public higher education, which includes three public segments—the University of California (UC), the California State University (CSU), and the California Community Colleges. It also includes more than 150 private nonprofit colleges and about 200 for-profit institutions. In total, the state’s colleges and universities enroll more than 2.1 million students.

This is a full time position, preferably based at our main office in Sacramento. We like having the staff together there at least three days a week.

CALmatters is nimble, innovative, and experimental and we know not everything we try will be successful. This reporter will engage our audience during and after the reporting process using social media, new engagement platforms like Hearken and what we call Open Reporting to understand the interest in our topics and what that means for storytelling tools, language and topics.
