General Description

The Executive Director for Presidential Communications reports directly to the President of Louisiana State University, and has primary responsibility for helping the President shape his strategic communications and developing and maintaining a plan to provide an organizational context for national trends in education.  Most importantly, the Executive Director will provide creative and research support to the President to foster his vision for LSU.  The Executive Director will closely follow political, financial, demographic, and technological developments related to education on both the national and state levels and help select those subjects that will provide the President with a platform to help form public opinion on higher education.  Utilizing an in-depth knowledge of public policy for education and the financing of public education the Executive Director will manage the design of communications  to further the creation of coalitions, partnerships, and support groups that will be necessary to meet LSU’s primary goals. 

Duties & Responsibilities

The Executive Director has significant staff duties within the Office of the President to assist with the creation and strategic dissemination of the President’s vision of higher education’s responsibility within Louisiana and throughout the nation.  Through the creative processes of research, writing, editing, and collaboration the Executive Director will play a primary role in message creation and provide advice and counsel on ways to assist the President with opportunities to articulate the LSU’s importance and social and economic contributions to Louisiana.   She/he will possess the knowledge and acumen necessary to anticipate those events that require the President’s opinions and the skill needed to ensure that those  opinions are effectively disseminated.  In addition to serving the President, the Executive Director will assist the senior executives of the University and the Board of Supervisors in shaping their communications to state political and business leaders, media outlets, and other constituencies and to guarantee consistency with the President’s statements, speeches, and written communications.  The Executive Director also will assist with preparation of special events designed to highlight the leadership of the University or those occasions when the President or senior administrators will play a prominent role by articulating LSU’s mission and vision.

The Executive Director will work closely with the President, the various Vice Presidents, and staff members of the division of Communications and University Relations.  The Executive Director will also be expected to provide personal communications advice and support to the President in addressing sensitive and high profile issues affecting the University’s public image.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required


At least eight years of experience within the field of higher education communications, journalism, political or corporate communications, or other fields in which creative communications are required to further public policy or ideas. Demonstrated professional experience in expository or journalistic writing , and the creation of  speeches, and organizational communications. Experience with online communications, media relations, publication, and government & community relations.


  • Broad knowledge of the workings of public higher education including the financial, social, and political challenges it presently faces.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an expert foundation in grammar and rhetoric and the composition of various communications devices.
  • Very strong research skills.
  • Strong knowledge and professional work experience in expository or journalistic writing, including story development and editing.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for senior level executives and a clear understanding of the difference between speech writing and article creation and ability to perform both tasks.
  • Ingenuity to develop communication themes, concepts, and ideas and to determine methods to achieve communication goals creatively.
  • Broad knowledge of communication outlets and contacts within the various fields.
  • Strong working knowledge of new media including the use of social media to enlist support and distribute information.
  • Working knowledge of not-for-profit advancement preferably in an academic setting that balances centralized and decentralized development.
  • Knowledge of event planning –particularly the role of the speaker.
  • Absolute discretion.


It is critical that the Executive Director for Presidential Communications exhibit the qualities of emotional maturity, self-confidence, creativity, political savvy, diplomacy, confidentiality, tact and discretion.  He/She must be committed to advancing the mission of LSU in particular and public higher education in general.  He/She must at times be prepared to subjugate ambition for the purpose of advancing the President’s agenda and must always be prepared to help the President and other University officials stay on message.
