Enterprise reporter
Embarcadero Media

Embarcadero Media, an independent news organization, is hiring a full-time enterprise and general assignment reporter to cover the multifaceted and always lively education, youth and families beat in Silicon Valley, California. This beat encompasses northern Santa Clara County (Palo Alto and Mountain View area) public K-12 districts, private and public charter schools, preschool and transitional kindergarten, and higher education including Stanford University, community colleges and major private schools.

Reporting ranges from policy-level analysis and data crunching to human interest storytelling. As much as possible, this beat focuses on people, impacts and implications rather than simply on the actions of institutions.

An enterprise mentality is a must for this position: The reporter will be skilled in seeing issues in the big picture, spotting trends, identifying gaps or friction points in districts’ governance, asking why programs failed those they were intended to serve and how situations can be better managed. Coverage of school board meetings is not the point of this job. While the reporter will be expected to stay abreast of decisions being made in local districts, the enterprise approach calls for synthesizing this information, digging for data, posing good questions of a variety of sources and producing incisive, informative and smart coverage.

At times, reporting will require investigative effort, the filing of Public Records Act requests and persistent behind-the-scenes interviewing of non-official sources in order to gain a full understanding of what is happening.

Examples of the breadth of subjects this beat reporter could cover beyond traditional K-12 education: diversity and equality issues, social-emotional health, trends in higher education, immigration, the changing pressures on families, and technology’s unfolding impact on youth and education.

The use of social media networks to access youth and engage them in our coverage is also paramount, as is developing a stable of sources at the high schools to ensure the relevance of our reporting. The voices of youth themselves should be included in stories as much as possible.

The reporter will be expected to share in the reporting of breaking and general assignment news, turning out well-reported, clean copy quickly. The position also includes other non-beat reporting and tasks as assigned or as agreed upon with the editor.

As required of all Embarcadero Media staff writers, the enterprise reporter will actively participate in online video and audio reporting, multimedia projects and reporter roundtables with our readers.

This position offers health insurance and a 401(k) savings plan, paid vacation, paid sick time and paid company holidays.
