The Colorado Sun
The Colorado Sun is seeking an experienced reporter to cover education, with the understanding that K-12 education is one of the most important economic development, social and political issues facing Colorado. We are particularly interested in exploring the complicated realities in districts outside the metro-Denver area, where schools struggle with budget constraints, teacher shortages, the needs of immigrant students and mental health issues.
The successful candidate will understand that the best stories are not about process or school board meetings; they’re about people. This reporter should know how to dig into documents, public records and spreadsheets with the skill of an investigative reporter, but also be adept at using those findings to tell stories that resonate across the state. The reporter will become knowledgeable about a variety of education issues and systems, including funding, testing, charter schools and school security.
Rise to the top of the stack with proven ability to balance long-range projects with lively, quick-hit stories. We seek a self-starter with the ability to work independently, but who also is a fearless collaborator. The ideal candidate should be productive and bring urgency to their work. The reporter should be a strong performer on social media, understand the power and importance of working in a digital environment and be prepared to work flexible hours to cover the news when and where it happens.
Colorado is filled with many points of view, and potential candidates must be able to produce non-partisan, fair and accurate journalism that reflects these varied views. The Colorado Sun aims to continue building a staff that reflects the rich diversity of our state.
The job is based in Colorado, and statewide travel is required.
