We are not looking for a reporter who covers school board meetings because, “Hey, the board is meeting this week,” We want a reporter who breaks news, not follows it. We want a reporter who can expose what’s wrong with our system – and shine a bright light on what works, as well. We want a reporter who can write with sophistication about education trends and issues. We want someone to critique performance. And, we want a reporter who understands what’s important about education – not just to educators, but also students, parents, taxpayers and employers.
This is primarily an enterprise beat, but in order to build and maintain your audience you will need – want – to have a great deal of frequency. That doesn’t mean daily 20-inch stories, but rather an effective mix of digital enterprise, video, engaging lists, news coverage, possibly blog posts and higher-end enterprise.
This is a challenging position. It’s also critical.
