Education Reporter
The Albuquerque Journal

The Albuquerque Journal has an immediate opening for an experienced education reporter to cover the Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Yes, you will have to cover school board meetings. And, yes, you will have to write feature stories from time to time. You may even be called upon to help out with legislative coverage during the session.

But most of all, we’re looking for someone who can see beyond the day-to-day responsibilities of the beat to craft compelling enterprise, watchdog and data-driven stories that inform and educate our readers on what is – and is not – working in a school district responsible for preparing more than 90,000 students to be contributing members of society.

The ideal candidate will be someone:

  • Comfortable working in an online-first newsroom and engaging with readers through social media.
  • Who understands that the best education stories are found in the classroom, not the newsroom.
  • Excellent at establishing strong working relationships with administrators, teachers, staff, parents, students and others in the education community.

In short, we’re looking for someone our readers can count on to learn what’s taking place inside the schools and why.

If interested, please send cover letter, resume, references and clips to Metro Editor Nick Pappas at or mail them to the Albuquerque Journal, Attn: Metro Editor Nick Pappas, P.O. Drawer J, Albuquerque, NM 87103.
