Palm Beach Post
The Palm Beach Post, an award-winning, digitally-savvy media company in beautiful Palm Beach County, is looking for a dynamic reporter to cover education in Palm Beach County.
We seek stories with depth and context that impact the lives of people in this county of 1.5 million people, and Florida.
Who are we?
We’re one of the bigger papers in Florida, and the largest of Gannett’s 19 dailies in the state. The Gannett Florida Network oftentimes collaborates on projects, and promotes each other’s content, so much of what you’ll write will be seen by a vast audience in this state of 20.3 million. The Palm Beach Post has multiple effective digital platforms that reach a wide audience, but we also are a legacy brand, having been around for more than 100 years.
We’re a media company that has always punched above its weight class amid a competitive landscape.
We have specific growth plans for the future, and clearly defined goals based on solid journalism.
What will you do?
You’ll be part of a news operation with a long history of valuing education coverage in the state’s most competitive market. You will put breaking school news into context and also produce insightful enterprise and investigative pieces.
You will cover K-12 in the nation’s 10th largest school district and devote about 10-20% of your time on higher education, as our market includes one of Florida’s largest state colleges, Florida Atlantic University, as well as several small private colleges. There also is the possibility of the University of Florida starting a large campus for graduate programs in West Palm Beach so you’ll be in charge of that, coordinating with our business/growth and West Palm Beach reporters.
While you will handle higher education solely, you’ll be part of a two-person education team that has produced work that has been recognized at the state and national levels.
Stories you write can have local, state and national impact.
What we need from you
A relentless curiosity and a knack to identify potential stories that impact people.
An ability to digest complex subjects for our audience and to juggle long-form enterprise stories with occasional dailies from the beat.
Being adept at social media and bringing innovative ways to promote content and grow our audience is important.
We’re looking for three years’ work experience in journalism or equivalent experience required. Previous coverage of education and database reporting is preferred.
Palm Beach County is a great place to live and work so consider joining our team.
