Overview

FUNCTION OF THE UNIT

Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS Radio, Television and Online serves San Diego County with news, information, entertainment and cultural content. The organization presents local and national content that is valued and trusted by the community. KPBS also produces and distributes content about San Diego that is valued by local, regional, national and international audiences and is worthy of support.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Engage the KPBS audience with your curiosity about how people learn, and create stories with lively, people­ centered reporting on the education beat. Find the people affected by changes in education policy and technology-children, adults, lifelong learners and in diverse communities. Cultivating the education beat is important, but all KPBS reporters will work outside their beats, or conversely team up on their beats, as the news merits.

The Education reporter will work at the direction of the Director of News & Editorial Strategy (ONES), under the supervision of the News Editor, and work in coordination with other members of the News Division.

KPBS news beats also include arts & culture, border, environment, health, investigative, metro, and science & technology. The Education reporter will pitch and produce news stories that are then assigned by the editorial staff, and produced for digital, TV and radio formats.. Stories will be distributed on all KPBS platforms, including web, podcasts, radio, TV, social media and may also be distributed by KPBS partners.

The Education reporter may be assigned to fill in for other positions, including anchoring newscasts or web producing, and will appear as a guest or host on KPBS TV and radio programs. The Education Reporter will produce local content and prepare final productions that can be distributed on all KPBS platforms.

The Education reporter is expected to participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS community building events and other public relations activities.

Responsibilities

News Reporting and Producing:

  • KPBS News Reporters have a bevy of options to employ when providing news content: spot news, feature reports, cut and copy, live debrief, tape talk, field packages, photos, video, audio, and newscasts. The primary flow of work will be to start a story online, shoot video on the topic and edit it or work in partnership with a videographer for longer pieces as needed, and move the gathered content across all news platforms.
  • The reporter, at the direction of the DNES, will follow the KPBS Strategic Plan and Editorial Vision.
  • The reporter will determine the appropriate technique in serving the KPBS audience with content, while meeting ongoing news expectations.
  • The reporter researches topics, develops contacts and interviews sources, maintains notes and broadcast recordings, writes and edits reports, produces and voices reports for air, and works with a production unit to produce TV and multi-media productions.
  • Reports stories in appropriate forms for online and broadcast (live on-air, copy, actuality, cut & copy, voicer, wrap, feature, series, documentary, studio two-way, radio, TV, etc.)
  • Possesses excellent storytelling skills and high journalistic standards

Planning:

  • Reads and follows major developments on general stories, and especially on issues s/he has covered in the past.
  • Maintains contact lists and files for on-going continuity of coverage and accumulation of knowledge
  • Brainstorms story ideas with reporters, supervisor and producers of television, public affairs, and web

Other duties:

  • Attends meetings, represents the station at public events, and is responsible for appropriate record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment and other duties as assigned.

This position is within the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of data-driven journalism tools such as databases and Excel.
  • Possess knowledge of current San Diego and regional issues.
  • Experience in a major media market.
  • Ability to grow and use Hearken for audience-centered reporting, and source-building.
  • Track record placing local stories with national news outlets.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree of equivalent work in journalism. 
  • Minimum two years professional experience as a news journalist, preferable in TV and/or radio.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in research, preferably in a broadcast or print news/interview setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in online production, including writing, editing, graphic design, HTML, photography and audio and video production. 
  • Journalistic Experience in public radio or television.
