The San Antonio Report
The San Antonio Report, a nonprofit news outlet in the country’s seventh-largest city, is seeking an energetic and curious reporter to cover the education beat. The San Antonio Report offers competitive pay, full benefits, and generous paid time off, and also embraces a collaborative work culture.
San Antonio’s education landscape is complex, with 17 school districts, a plethora of charter schools and private schools, six four-year higher education institutions, and a sprawling community college system. The vastness of educational entities in the San Antonio area creates a fertile ground for investigative reporting on school boards and special interest groups. Some school districts in the area frequently tangle with the Texas Education Agency over dysfunctional governance.
The San Antonio metro has one of the nation’s highest rates of poverty, which is an opportunity for an intrepid reporter to tell important community stories that explore how low education attainment rates are tied to economic segregation, and the dearth of resources for students in need.
The education reporter will be expected to break news and stay on top of the happenings throughout San Antonio’s education landscape. The community looks to the San Antonio Report for its expertise and its thoughtful and thorough reporting and this reporter will need to uphold those standards, from covering breaking news to enterprise reporting. This reporter also will be asked to integrate themselves in the education community to cultivate sources and gain trust with students, teachers, administrators, and school board members. Overall, this is a unique opportunity for an energetic reporter to explore many topics related to education and make the beat their own.
