Education Reporter
The Rivard Report

Date Posted: November 1, 2017
Industry: Online News Media
Job Status: Fulltime
Salary: Negotiable

The Rivard Report is seeking a full-time education reporter to cover both K-12 and higher education in San Antonio, the third-largest metro area in Texas. This growing, thriving city – with a rich cultural history dating back 300 years – is home to several ambitious public and private universities, including the University of Texas Health Science Center, Trinity University and Saint Mary’s University. But it also has some of the most underfunded and low-performing public K-12 school districts in the country. We want a smart, energetic, experienced reporter with initiative and creativity to cover all of that, and more. The ideal candidate will look beyond the press releases to tell original, impactful stories about students, teachers, school board members, parents and community members.

As a key part of our digital news team, this reporter will be expected both to break news and to produce enterprise stories. We want a reporter who does that through traditional beat reporting, data reporting (in collaboration with our data editor), and narrative storytelling.

— Strong reporting skills, with at least three years’ experience in a newsroom, preferably covering education. (Experience covering public officials on the city, county or state level also applies.)

– Proven ability to write well-organized, accurate copy on tight deadlines while also conceiving and pursuing long-term project stories.

— Willingness to work closely with editors (and other colleagues) in shaping the best stories for our audience.

— Willingness to check political opinions at the door. We aim to produce impactful journalism that informs local and state decision-making, but we do not want a journalist on a “mission.”

— Although not a requirement, the ideal candidate would speak Spanish.
