UCP VII – University Relations Associate

Job Summary:  The University of Connecticut is seeking an experienced writer with a solid background in media relations for its office of University Communications.  The successful candidate will be responsible for developing stories about newsworthy UConn people, programs and research that includes identifying opportunities, interviewing sources and writing stories in press release and feature-length formats; pitching University-based stories to appropriate national, regional and local news media outlets, and performing appropriate follow-up; responding to media inquiries and monitoring daily news with an eye to placing University experts in the media.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or a related field is required; minimum 5 years as a reporter, media relations or public relations professional with an outstanding portfolio of media placements; excellent writing and interviewing skills, preferably achieved through journalism training; knowledge of news operations and the needs of reporters;  ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, willing to work flexible hours when activities fall outside normal working hours, and proactively contribute to team efforts; must demonstrate tact and superior interpersonal/communication skills and techniques; must possess excellent planning, organization and coordination skills; must be proficient in Microsoft products and the Internet; must be a self-starter and able to work without guidance, and make judgments based on sound journalistic background.                                   

Preferred Qualifications:  Significant experience reporting on academic research and higher education or pitching research-based stories as a public relations professional to attract national, regional and local media coverage; excellent news judgment and demonstrated ability to translate complex research into engaging stories for a variety of audiences; ability to work effectively with faculty, researchers and senior administrators to identify, report and promote stories both internally and externally; extensive knowledge of beat reporters, editors and producers at state, regional and national media outlets; experience covering or working for a university or other research institution and/or media outlet.

Appointment Terms:  This is a full-time position.
