About the Opportunity
The Digital and Social Media Manager reports to the Vice President for Communications. This position will have primary responsibility for web-based communications, as well as managing and building the UNC System’s social media presence across multiple platforms. The position will provide editorial support to divisions within the UNC System Office on communications needs, and will create, edit, produce and post various forms of digital content including video, audio, information graphics and text for online dissemination via digital platforms, including, but not limited to the UNC System website, regular email newsletters and social media sites such Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. The Digital and Social Media Manager will also develop a metrics strategy to monitor the effectiveness of digital communications, marketing, and social media engagement initiatives. The person will manage consulting designers, illustrators and marketing vendors, and have regular interaction with the System’s IT staff.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.
About the Team
The University Communications office is responsible for providing subject matter expertise and coordination of the University’s branding, strategic communications, social media, web site, media relations, and community relations activities. This includes advising and providing communications support to the President, senior officers, and functional offices that comprise the UNC System Office. This office also serves a coordination and liaison role on behalf of the System Office to the chief communications officers of the constituent universities of the UNC System.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Competencies
- Superior English, written communication skills, including writing, copy editing, proofreading and storytelling
- Understanding of the role played by digital communications as a way of storytelling and branding support
- Familiarity with brand standards and oversight of branding elements and consistency
- Understanding of user-centered web design and online publishing environment
- Working knowledge of social media platforms and best practices
- Knowledge of AP Style • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills, tactfulness
- Ability to work as part of a team, where ongoing collaboration is critical
- Strong project management skills with analytical problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite software, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
- Detail oriented with good organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and creatively with limited supervision
- Experience working with content management systems (UNC System uses WordPress Gutenberg) and search engine optimization
- Ability to train others on content management systems
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
- Prefer 5 years of demonstrated expertise building and managing organizational digital content and social media presence
- Familiarity with higher education and/or public sector agencies
- Photography, videography and graphic design skills
