Assistant Managing Editor
Education Week is looking for Assistant Managing Editor to join its editorial team.
The Assistant Managing Editor role for Education Week is a vital position in our news operation as these editors are most directly responsible for planning coverage and guiding our reporting efforts. At the same time, these editors sit at the forefront of our strategic imperative to develop deep expertise in the audience communities we serve. In our newsroom, each Assistant Managing Editor is responsible for supervising 2-4 reporters while also acting as our resident expert on one of the five main audience groups we serve (school district leaders, principals, teachers, policy and industry leaders, and higher education professionals) for the purpose of guiding all newsroom efforts to provide news and information to that audience group.
We are a mission-driven news organization – one of the first non-profit newsrooms — with a tradition of excellence and a passion for serving the K-12 education field. We’re looking for an editor who understands K-12 education and can articulate a vision for coverage on a range of topics that is fresh, insightful, and highly relevant to the K-12 professional audience.
Specifically, the Assistant Managing Editor will lead a highly motivated team of reporters covering some of the most vital and dynamic issues in the field: the teaching profession, curriculum and instruction, and how factors such as race, disabilities, and being a non-native speaker of English impact opportunities for students and influence educators at the school and classroom levels.
Education Week is at an exciting point in its history, a time of transition and opportunity. We have made recent major investments in our digital operations through a strategic redesign of edweek.org, a major technology upgrade that includes a new CMS, a robust use of Metrics for News analytics to expand and deepen our audience relationships, and exciting brand work. This Assistant Managing Editor will join a seasoned and energetic editing team that is poised to embrace a newsroom-wide advance editorial planning process and sharpen our journalism to grow our audience and raise the profile of our expertise. We’re looking for an editorial leader who is comfortable with change and can provide a compassionate and steady leadership hand to their team members.

- Lead and manage a group of 2-4 reporters, working with them to develop and execute coverage plans on their respective beats
- Work one-on-one with individual reporters on their stories, providing guidance before and during the story development, and diligent editing of copy when the story is filed
- Assure overall quality of all content produced by your reporter group
- Coordinate closely with the Visual and Immersive Experience (VEX) team to assure that the visual expression of our journalism is properly considered and executed
- Develop and maintain a high level of understanding of one of our main audience groups – to be assigned by the Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor – and serve as the voice of that audience group in daily news meetings and other newsroom activities
- Committed to exploring and elevating issues of equity, inclusion, racial and social justice in K-12
- Develop and produce Special Reports as assigned
- Serve as coordinator with EdWeek’s Development office on coverage supported through grants, including helping to develop grant proposals for new funding and providing reports for existing funding
- Coordinate and partner with events team to plan and execute editorial webinars and other live and virtual events
- Work with social media and audience engagement teams on launch plans for stories and packages of stories to assure maximum exposure to the right audience
- Bachelor’s degree, with at least 5-7 years’ related experience in a news, media, information, or education organization
- Extensive knowledge of the field of K-12 education
- Ability to recognize news and trends in education, and conceptualize appropriate coverage and content for Education Week and its multiple platforms
- Excellent hands-on editing skills
- Strong orientation toward delivering results, able to set priorities and manage individuals to achieve them
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with various levels of management and audience
- Efficient time management, organizational, and prioritization skills
- Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficient in editorial software programs and comfortable adapting to changing

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of our staff is still working remotely, but we are beginning to transition staff back to the Bethesda office as conditions allow. Upon reopening, the expectation is that this position will be located and performed in the office. Candidates that live within regular commuting distance to the office or are willing to relocate to the DC/MD/VA area are preferred.
