New to the Beat Program 2019: FAQs
Who is eligible to apply for New to the Beat?
Applicants must be journalist members of the Education Writers Association with less than two years experience covering education. (Not yet a member? Apply here.)
I’ve been a journalist for more than two years but this is my first time on the education beat. Am I eligible to apply?
Do I have to be a K-12 education reporter to apply?
No. We welcome applications from reporters who cover education from preschool through higher education. We understand that some applicants may also be responsible for covering issues beyond education. That’s OK, too, as long as education is one of your primary beats.
Is there any cost to participate?
No. New to the Beat participants will receive scholarships to offset the cost of participation.
What are my responsibilities as a New to the Beat participant?
- Attend the rookie boot camp Oct. 27-28 near Baltimore.
- Interact regularly with your mentor over a six-month period.
- Produce at least one substantive news story that reflects your participation in the program. (Reporters retain all editorial control over the content.)
OK – I’m interested. What do I need to do?
Complete the application and have your newsroom supervisor email us a brief letter of support confirming that your related story project will be published upon completion. (The deadline to apply for the fall round of New to the Beat was Sept. 26, 2019.)
